What is General Internal Medicine?

General Internal Medicine is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of adult diseases. It involves the care of patients with a wide range of complex medical conditions that affect various systems in the body, without being limited to a specific organ or disease. Internists (doctors specialized in internal medicine) are trained to manage a broad spectrum of medical issues, often serving as primary care providers for adults.

Conditions Commonly Treated by Internists:

  • Chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma

  • Heart diseases such as coronary artery disease and heart failure

  • Infectious diseases like pneumonia and influenza/-

  • Gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)

  • Autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus

  • Kidney problems, including chronic kidney disease and kidney stones

  • Internists are skilled in diagnosing and treating a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, including conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems, and kidney disorders.

They often handle complex cases where multiple systems are involved and coordinate care among specialists when needed.

  • Internists excel in managing chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders. They monitor patients’ progress, adjust treatments, and help manage the long-term impact of these diseases on the patient's quality of life.

  • General internal medicine focuses on a holistic approach, considering the entire well-being of the patient, rather than just a specific ailment. Internists take time to understand the physical, emotional, and social aspects of a patient's health, ensuring comprehensive care.

  • Internists often work in both hospital settings and outpatient clinics. They may be called upon to manage hospitalized patients with acute or serious illnesses, as well as those who need post-hospital care and follow-up treatment in an outpatient setting.

  • Since internists handle a broad range of medical issues, they are key in coordinating care when specialized treatment is necessary. They work closely with specialists in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and other fields to ensure patients receive the appropriate care for complex conditions.

  • Internists are experts in using diagnostic tools to evaluate symptoms and perform physical exams. They may order and interpret lab tests, imaging studies (like X-rays or MRIs), and other diagnostic procedures to help identify the root causes of health issues.

Our goal is to provide thorough, specialized care to help you achieve better health while avoiding unnecessary hospital visits.
